The Future of Law Enforcement and Future Crimes

Machine learning, an application of AI, promises to support law enforcement to more effectively and efficiently identify persons of interest, stolen vehicles or suspicious sounds and behaviour; predict trends in criminality or terrorist action; track illicit money flows; and flag and respond to terrorist use of the internet.

Its use by law enforcement is not, however, without controversy and very real and serious human rights concerns have been raised that can damage and undermine the trust placed in law enforcement by the community. 

At the same time, in the hands of criminals or terrorist organizations AI and robotics can enable new digital, physical and political threats. Although the integration of these technologies into crime and terrorism has yet to be substantially identified and preparedness for the emergence of new threats and crimes must be a priority as these technologies become more accessible and pervasive throughout society.

Heading the UNICRI Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics with the objective to enhance understanding of the risk-benefit duality of AI through improved scientific and technological coordination, knowledge collection and dissemination, awareness-raising and global outreach activities.

Finding synergies with traditional threats and risks as well as identifying solutions that AI can contribute to the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

He is a member of various of international task forces, including the World Economic Forum’s Global Artificial Intelligence Council, and the High-Level Expert Group on Artificial Intelligence of the European Commission.
