AI Technology in Healthcare Industry: Status and Challenges to Overcome

Growing levels of adoption in big data and artificial intelligence (AI) are bringing ever more hope especially for healthcare industry leading to better health outcomes, lower cost of care, and realization of precision medicine. AI has a great influence on the paradigm shift in healthcare as a core technology basis not only for assisting healthcare professionals through clinical decision support such as medical image reading but also for offering personalized treatment and care experience for patients or even improving the efficiency of hospital operation.

Since the introduction of IBM’s Dr. Watson in Korea, AI research in healthcare is growing by leaps and bounds both in the commercial and academic sectors along with several approvals of AI software as a medical device. In this talk, current status and future direction of AI-driven healthcare will be discussed, as well as a number of challenges to overcome for successful adoption of medical AI in and out of hospitals such as regulatory and governance issues.



Dr. Young-Hak Kim Professor, Asan Medical Center

Dr. Young-Hak Kim is an interventional cardiologist and professor at Asan Medical Center, University of Ulsan College of Medicine, Korea who specializes in coronary artery disease. His research interests include the angiographic evaluation of ischemic heart disease and the use of advanced imaging techniques for the assessment of cardiac function, which are reflected in more than 300 publications.

In addition to his clinical activities, Dr. Kim is Director of Health Innovation Big Data Center, Asan Institute for Life Sciences and also serves as Deputy Director for Medical Information and Chair of Department of Biomedical Informatics at Asan Medical Center.
